About

Tom started out as a drummer in his native Sheffield, playing in various bands, then switching to guitar for acoustic solo work. After moving to Liverpool around 1998, he discovered the poetry scene and adapted his song lyrics into poems, becoming a regular performer, eventually winning poetry slams, running his own poetry & music events and being featured on Channel 4 Television and at Glastonbury Festival.

Other creative ventures include organising gigs and poetry events, grassroots journalism, booklets and culture zines, performance art, happenings, street performance, experimental music, videography and one-man theatre shows.

Tom’s music varies in style from folky acoustic to rock, jazz and punk-influenced styles, often featuring intricate guitar work. His songs are highly melodic, with carefully-crafted lyrics. Tom has produced two CDs of self-composed songs on which he plays drums, bass and keyboards in addition to guitar and vocals. Tom has played throughout the UK and Europe, usually as a solo acoustic act, but sometimes embellished by percussion and/or woodwind instruments.

In recent years, Tom’s creative work has been increasingly influenced by nature and spirituality. He has been comissioned to write poems in response to the covid pandemic and community cohesion. In addition to incorporating these themes in his music and poetry, he runs wellbeing-focused creative writing workshops at literary festivals and venues nationwide.

Tom has recently published Keys to the Forest: A Poetic Journey, a collection of poetry and prose, with illustrations by Jennie Wishart.

Tom, drop me a line. Somebody asked me if I could do video of an event this week. I can’t do it. Don’t know if you might be interested.

  6. I like your style. As a theatre and gallery manager in Northern Ireland, I am constantly trying to encourage people to participate, particularly in things that seem alien to their experience. There is nothing better than seeing people open up to the world through art.
Feck, that sounded a bit poncey didn’t it?!

  7. So cool that you are located in Liverpool. I’m from across the pond (live in New Jersey, USA), but was in love with the Beatles (of course) and the whole Mersey-beat sound.

I’m sure this is before your time — but you should be proud of coming from a place that spawned so much great music and whose influence still reverberates around the world. Just curious, do you feel any connection with that Sixties music or is it old hat and boring to you?

    1. Music of the sixties is a major influence on me!! I’m a massive Hendrix and Dylan fan. One of my bands was basically a blues/improvisation trio influenced by Cream/Santana/Hendrix…I Would have loved to hang out in Haight Ashbury in the mid-sixties, probably around ’66, just before the whole world was really aware of what was happening there and it was still special and extraordinary…

      1. I kind of suspected there was some Sixties influence in your music. We in the States are currently in the midst of celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ first visit to the US (back in February 1964). That was a heady time for those of us lucky enough to remember it. (I was 12 at the time, living just across the Hudson River from New York City — the excitement was freakin’ palpable.)

You mentioned the Haight-Ashbury scene in the Sixties — I’ve just finished reading Tom Wolfe’s Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test which is about the very beginnings of that scene. It’s a really cool book — I should have a post about it within the next couple of days.

Oh, one other thing, do you happen to know the song “Good Shepard” by the Jefferson Airplane? They were a big part of that late-Sixties San Francisco sound. I chanced upon it the other day (had a vague memory of it from back in the day, but had pretty much forgotten about it) and it is soooo great. Check it out — it’s got this great guitar part that sends shivers up my spine!
